More PowerPoint presentations from Christa MaquƩ

Examples of musical preferences :

Duran Duran- Planet Earth
They are dressed with the frilly fop tops, and also have
the hairstyle that is part of the New Romantics collective identity.
Their music is based on synthesized/ electronic sounds.
Part of the lyrics in the first  0.38 seconds the lyrics mention the subculture
'Like some new romantic looking for the tv sound  '

Boy George- Turn 2 Dust
This is one of his most modern music videos released in 2011.
He is still dressed according to the flamboyant and eccentric fashion styles.
His heavy makeup, and evidence of dance pop is also part of the
collective identity in the New Romantics subculture.

Representation In The Media

This BBC story shows how the BBC Radio 2's new series: The story of the New Romantics presented by Martin Fry aims to change the way the public look at this subculture. He argues that  although their music embraces new technology, and has influenced budding stars music. Their music is against gritty backdrop, riots and unemployment.
Dj Rusty Egan pointed out that they have to dig around to glamorise their glum, horrible boring existence with no future. The programme explains how they decide to ''party and get dressed up'' in the face of social hardship. This is a negative portrayal of the subcultural group.
