Hipsters

Hippies

-The hippie subculture was originally a youth movement that started in the USA during the mid 1960s. The subculture continued to the 1970s and spread d across the world

-Their movement was the rejection of the mainstream American life.

-The movement arose in part as opposition to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War (1955–75), hippies were often not directly engaged in politics.

-Hippie fashions and values had a major effect on culture, influencing popular music, television, film, literature, and the arts.

- They developed their own distinctive style.

  • Men often grew beards
  • Both male and female would wear sandals, beads and rimless glasses
  • Long hair was favored
  • Granny floral dressed was often worn

-Hippies advocated nonviolence and love, a popular phrase being “Make love, not war,” for which they were sometimes called “flower children.”

-Public gatherings—part music festivals, sometimes protests, often simply excuses for celebrations of life—were an important part of the hippie movement.

-Following in the footsteps of the Beats, many hippies used cannabis (marijuana), considering it pleasurable
