MODS:
Mods, is a subculture that started off in London during the late 1950's to the early 1960's,
Mods were usually seen wearing parker jackets and riding vesper scooters, they were also known to listen to Ska music.
they were also associated with wearing beanies which is another way they would be known to be Mods.
Important aspects of the Mod subculture:
-Pop music, also including: Jamaican ska, African American soul, R&B.
-Their fashion ( Often tailored suits )
- Male mods often had a sophisticated look. And by wearing mohair clothes, wool or cashmere jumpers, button down shirts, pointed leather shoes often known as 'winklepickers'.
-They would also imitate the French Nouvelle vague cinema actors such as Jean-Paul.
Conflict:
- The mods and the rockers were in conflict with each other in the early to mid 1960's. Mods and Rocker gangs that were fighting in 1964 which created moral panic resulting in the public assuming that these two rival gangs were the folk devils.
- The rockers looked the opposite of the mods, they opted for the more macho biker gang image wearing colours such as black and leather jackets.
- By late 1966, the negative stereotype of the two subcultures had faded and the media started to focus more on the hippy and skinhead sub culture that was emerging.
- The mods considered the rockers to be: effeminate snobs, weedy and the rockers considered the mods to be out of touch, grubby and oafish.
- The mods often wore designer suits, however the rockers wore leather jackets and imitated Elvis.
- The two groups represented the division in British youth culture for the early part of the 60's.
- The Rockers listened to 1950's Rock n Roll which mostly by White American artists such as Eddie Cochran and Elvis Presley.
